While Oman is certainly known for its sandy beaches and majestic mountains Oman’s unique environment system is also a gem rich in variety, diversity with an abundance of natural attractions. Within this exceptionally unique environment a number of lush and stunning wadis are ripe for discovery.
Located in the Al Sharqiyah region, Wadi Bin Khalid is surrounded by tall palm trees with large pools of emerald crystal green water. Water flows all year round and Wadi Khalid is set against the backdrop of the rocky canyon and cliffs of the Hajar Mountains making it a truly picturesque setting for picnics and hikers.
Wadi Shab is around an hour and half away from the capital Muscat and forty minutes from the town of Sur. The Wadi is enclaved by beautiful hills, date palms and features a breath-taking waterfall inside the wadi’s caves. Hikers can explore the caves located in the wadi or opt for a rugged hike to the several pools which are ideal for a cooling dip or adventurous dive.
Next on the list is the relatively untouched Wadi Al Abriyeen in the Sharqiya region. Finding it is a bit of a challenge so it is best to take along a guide and keep a look out for sign boards. Flanking the wadi on both side are quaint villages who welcome tourists with true Omani hospitality. The local tribeswomen are enterprising and manage their own textile industry from which skilfully unique Omani garments are available for purchase. The wadi itself boasts mango trees, banana trees, lemon trees and wide range of flora and fauna.
Located in the Dhofar Region, not far behind the beach city of Taqa is Wadi Darbat. The wadi, is a beautiful picturesque scenic spot for anyone looking for a real taste of unspoilt nature. The wadi is bordered with breath-taking hills and a delightful waterfall. Wadi Darbat is home to lush pastures, a plethora of wildlife species and small caves dotted around the top of the valley. A favourite of tourists of all ages, it is an ideal escape from the modern world. During the monsoon season which takes place from June to July, the wadi becomes a bustling place with a range of stalls selling authentic Omani handmade crafts and restaurants offering the very best in Arabian street food delicacies.
