The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is home to around 200 islands one of which is the historic island of Sir Bani Yas. Taking its name from the tribal federation of Bani Yas of Najdi origin, the island is home to unique archaeological sites and a fantastic natural reserve. Measuring 17.5 km from north to south and 9 Km from east to west, it is the largest natural island in the United Arab Emirates.
Excavations began in the 1990’s when archaeologists unearthed a 7th century Christian church amongst existing remnants of the Late Stone Age and early Islamic structure remains. The church had been used by Nestorian Christians until about 750 AD and is part of a larger monastery complete with a series of courtyard houses all of which date to both the 7th and 8th century. Hundreds of rare artefacts were also found and provide insight into how people lived. The inhabitants of the Monastery raised cattle, sheep and goats but also sourced their food straight from the oceans. Fine glass and beautiful ceramics indicated that people traded across the Arabian Gulf and into the Indian Ocean.
The Island is also to the region’s largest wildlife reserve. Established by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan in 1977, the reserve currently spans over 87 km2. Decades of extensive conservation work and savvy ecological investments have ensured the development and preservation of the reserve. Today the reserve is home to thousands of free roaming species, millions of lush trees and unique flora and fauna. A large number of colourful and rare residents can also be spotted amongst rare plants and flowers.
There is no shortage of activities on this paradise island. Adventure safaris, kayaking, mountain biking, archery, hiking and snorkelling are all excellent options.
